DNA RESEARCH

Using the Male "Y" Chromosome

The first thing to understand about The "Y" Chromosome, is that it remains unaltered from Father to Son, that is your Great, Great, Great Grandfather will have the same "Y" Chromosome as your Grand Children and therefore it makes very good sense to use such a tool to identify your Ancestors, your Cousins, and your Origins.

Women researching their Family History need only get a swab from their father, brother, son, or male cousin.

There is no blood involved in the process of obtaining your DNA, just a simple swab to the inside of your cheek.

Several scientific groups around the world offer this service, however, the one that stands out as the most acceptable worldwide is 'FamilytreeDNA', an American company specialising in DNA research for Family History Research.

'FamilytreeDNA' now have the results of over 29,000 records in their Y-DNA database and these are spread over 1500 Surname Projects which includes over 9,000 surnames.

The Service offers 3 levels of research being 12 Markers, 25 Markers and 37 Markers. Obviously the more markers you take the more information you will gain and the more you take the smaller your list will be of possible matches to others in the world.
